Drive-by Photography: Emergency Ballon Landing
May 27, 2009
I had a unique experience over the weekend. While driving back from a fun evening out with the kids we espied a hot air ballon landing in a small field next to the highway. I made a quick exit and tracked back to the place where I saw it come down. It wasn’t too hard to find.
It turns out that it was a company that offers ballon rides in the northern Virgina area that was touching down with a basketful of tourists. What I found amazing was that the pilot was able to land the ballon in a 30′ by 50′ field that was boxed in by power lines, a busy highway, and a trailer park – an almost surgical operation.

The part I found amusing was that after paying a hefty fee for the ride, the passengers had to help pack it all up – a lot of heave-ho.

The last time I watched a hot air balloon land it was on fire and killed multiple passengers. This was in British Columbia almost two years ago. It wasn’t fun.

Wow. Kudos to the pilot for pulling off such an amazing stunt and kudos to you for tracking it down like this.
