When You Wish Upon A (Green) Star

Environmentalism in a hot topic these days and has been receiving a lot of media attention. However, the green movement would not have made it this far without a little help from our friends in Hollywood.

Let’s face it, every time Brad Pitt farts he instantly winds up gracing the cover of 15 magazines. Wouldn’t it be great if he could do it while wearing an organic cotton shirt while driving a bio-diesel powered car? In the movie industry this is called ‘product placement’.

There are a number of stars that have voluntarily hopped on the eco-bandwagon. Long time environmentalists, such as Jack Nicolson blazed the path when most people weren’t even paying attention, while newcomers to the scene (e.g., Miley Cyrus) speak to the next generation.

However, there are those who have ‘come out’, announcing their support for the green movement, yet their actions say otherwise. For example, does anyone remember when Tom Cruise and Nicole Kidman showed up at an L.A. environmentalist rally with their baby girl wearing a disposable diaper? How about Virgin Airline’s first bio-fuel powered flight from London to Amsterdam with an empty plane? What about the time Gwyneth Paltrow… or when she… Aw, heck, when hasn’t she been an environmental hypocrite?

Every time the paparazzi snaps a picture of George Clooney cruising down Rodeo Drive in his EV, that’s free publicity for the environmental cause. But, when Woody Harrelson forgets his favorite pair of shoes and has them express flown from California to France, his actions fly in the face of all the hard work the real environmentalists are doing. (In Woody’s defense, he is reportedly starving himself for 40 days as a self imposed punishment  – whatever that is supposed to accomplish.)

Much like politicians (who are celebrities in their own right), actors/actresses and musicians are in the business of promoting themselves. The more good publicity they get, the better for their business (unless you’re Dennis Rodman). What better way to get free media attention than being a part of a hot new trend? The problem starts when they don’t look before they take the environmental leap.

For your reading enjoyment, here are a few other examples of celebrities efforts to seem green, but failing miserably.
