Fortune’s Favour Smiled Upon Me

This weekend I had the wonderful experience of *finally* seeing Great Big Sea in concert. I’ve been a fan for many years, but I only get out to see a concert once in a great while. I missed an opportunity last year when they played the Warner Theater in DC. But, that was actually a good thing because this time they played Wolf Trap – a beautiful, relaxed venue, not to mention easier to get to.

My wife purchased the tickets about 6 months ago as an anniversary present to me. Needless to say, the event was long anticipated. The band did not disappoint.

Great Big Sea performed many of their classic hits such as “Mari-Mac” and “Ordinary Day” and ballads like “General Taylor”, as well as a selection of high-energy songs off their new album. The only disappointment was that the vocals were a bit muddled throughout the performance – not the band’s fault, but the sound engineer deserves a sound spanking.

The big surprise to me was that GBS was actually the opening act. Another band, Eddie From Ohio (EFO), was the main act. Though I had never heard of EFO, they got their start in the DC Metro area about 18 years ago. The concert at Wolf Trap was, more or less, a homecoming for them.

EFO is a very musically talented group, though hard to pin down to a specific genre of music. When they first came out, I would have sworn that they were Fleetwood Mac. But as the night went on, I also heard a heathly dose of “Blue Highway” (bluegrass), a dash of “Bill Gaither” (gospel), a dolop of “Trisha Yearwood” (country), and a sprinkle of “Del McCoury” (folk) in the mix. I suppose you might call them well rounded.

All-in-all, it was a very good evening of entertainment, though I wished that Great Big Sea could have played a bit longer.

Great Big Sea is currently touring in support of their new album “Fortune’s Favour”. The concert dates can be found on their web site.

Eddie From Ohio also has a new album out, “This Is Me”. Their web site can be found here.
